Developmental Chart For Feeding Infants

Weaning is expanding the diet to include foods and drinks other than breast milk or infant formula, and should begin no earlier than four months and no later than six months.

Four to six months:

1. Puree vegetables or fruit
2. Non-wheat cereals, with formula or water
3. Potatoes
4. Semi-solid food from a spoon

Six to nine months:

1. Food can be more coarsely pureed
2. Avoid salt and limit sugar

Nine to 12 months:

1. Mature diet of three meals a day with snacks or milk
2. Milk and water are still first-choice
3. Minced or finely chopped meat
4. Cooked vegetables
5. Avoid salt and limit sugar
6. Limit sweet snacks

Remember...

• Breast milk or infant formula should be given for one year.
• Pasteurized cow's milk should only be given after one year.
• Semi-skimmed milk should not be used before two years.
• Fully skimmed milk should not be used before five years.
